IMPLANTS FAQ’S
Are dental Implants worth having?
Generally yes if you have enough healthy bone in which to place the implants. We can tell you this quickly after a detailed examination with Dr.Kilcoyne
How long do tooth implants last for?
The average is 10-15 years if regularly reviewed and maintained/cleaned well, after they have been in place OK for 1 year. There is some early risk your body rejects the implant, but success rates on average are over 90% when bone and gum conditions are good and kept healthy.
Beware those saying implants last for life - this is rare and remember you have already lost your natural implant, the tooth, for some reason, so we don't want to exaggerate or over-promise.
Who CAN’T have dental implants?
People where gum disease is still active, as the gums around implants can get infected and fail the implant, just like a tooth. Also smoking and high alcohol consumption reduces success of implants taking to your bone, as well as some medical conditions like unstable diabetes or if you've been on bisphosphonates for weak bones etc. We check all this at your visit with us.
Are there different types of tooth implants?
Yes there are many different types; mini-implants, midi-implants and full sized ones, as well as different brands and designs for different quality or quantity of bone. Dr.Kilcoyne provides many options that best suit your particular needs and circumstances.
Can you do minimal surgery with placing implants?
Yes, when conditions are favourable, we can even sometimes place the Implant the same day we extract a broken tooth or root, whilst everything is numb, saving visits.
How many teeth can you replace with tooth implants?
As many as there is space for or with enough bone to support, so even all teeth if wished. However we find some areas of the mouth need bone grafting or 2 Implants can carry 3 teeth where the middle tooth is carried by the 2 stronger implants over an area of poor bone, for example. Dr. Kilcoyne has done many cases that require careful and clever planning, when not everything is ideal for dental implants.
How painful is getting a dental implant?
There is some discomfort of healing after an implant has been placed. Think of it like an extraction of a tooth and how uncomfortable that is afterwards, but in this case we are putting a tooth root in. So painkillers for 2 days and using mouthwashes is generally sufficient for most of our patients; some needed nothing after 24 hours, some bigger cases needed a bit longer.
